  • Feeling guilty- I haven’t had much time for reading since the 2nd week of school. I’ll try to make up for it over spring break. -Kat

I bought beautiful new bookends, which are currently holding my Winter Break List!! See my last post for the specifics on what I’m attempting to read!
I have been in love with these bookends (from Pottery Barn Teen) since September. They are a very appreciated early birthday present. :)

  • Winter Break List

WOOO Winter Break. No school. What does this mean? Enough time to have a life or at least, read some books.

    My List:

    1. Breathing Space By: Gregg Mitman
This is the Common Read book for the “college” I’m in at Madison. Mitman is actually the director of the Nelson Institute, so it is rather cool to be reading a book by a faculty member. The topic (allergies and how they shape our lives and landscapes) rather interests me more than it would most people.
    2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince By J.K. Rowling
I’ve been switching off with this book and Breathing Space just because you can only read so much about allergies for so long.
    3. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks By Rebecca Skloot
Sadly, this book is currently on the side burner because I’m so caught up in Harry Potter and Breathing Space (because I need to have that read for next semester). I AM going to finish this book sometime though. Maybe after I finish HP and Breathing Space.
    4. The Environmental Communication Yearbook: Volume 1 Edited by: Susan L. Seneach
Not exactly most people’s idea of something fun and light to read, but I discovered this book while studying for finals. Everything on the bookshelf intrigued me, but I settled on this one. I’ve surprisingly been picking this book up whenever I find time or whenever I don’t feel like reading any of the above mentioned books.
    5. The Green Book By Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen
This was given to me by a friend. We’ll see, if and when, I have time for it. …
    6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo By: Stieg Larsson
I’ve only been wanting to read this book since it first appeared in my independent book’s inventory and appeared on IndieBound’s October 2008 Indie Next List. No big deal. I have it on audio though, so the likelihood of me actually getting through the book even though I’m at school is much higher.

Sorry again for disappearing for long. I’ve been busy and sick and ahh… I’ve had no time for anything. I promise to be better.
I guess this is my mini-New Year’s Resolution: READ MORE.
    Cliche? Yes.
    Possible? Hopefully.
    Wish me luck!

Good luck on all your New Year’s Resolutions whether they include reading or not!
    -Kat

PS- I stopped in at a local, independent bookstore for the first time in a long time to do some Christmas shopping. I suggest EVERYONE go to your independent book store next time you need a new book to read. If you don’t know where one is near you, go here to find one. Independent bookstores are an important part of every community, so please support them. As a book lover you’ll be welcomed by people that love reading as much as you do. Please, please, please support your local, independent bookstores. Without them, some awesome authors (such as Patrick Rothfuss) would never have been as successful and well-known as they are today (along with numerous other benefits independents have).
Check out IndieBound for more reasons why! :)

  • Hiatus & Updates on My List

So my school year has been a lot more hectic than usual. I definitely am just trying to focus on getting through the end of the semester and making it out without getting horribly ill.

However, currently, I’m in the middle of reading:
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
My school hosted the author, Rebecca Skloot, so of course, I went to listen. Great speaker. I’m glad I went.
I’m currently on a committee my school’s common read program, so I am busy helping to plan next year’s book already.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Still working on this… Part one of the seventh movie was good though. I’d recommend it.

Hopefully, after the semester ends, I’ll have time to take care of myself and maybe get some reading in, too.
Good luck to everyone who’s working on their Lists!

  • Quotation

I initiated Go Big Read because books take us to places we will never visit and help us appreciate lives we will never live. They expand what is possible for us to imagine and to do with our lives. They inspire our own thoughts and creativity. Books are even more amazing when we read and shared with others.
    — Biddy Martin, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Taken from her letter to all students participating in Go Big Read.
